The Fond Farewell by Edmund Blair Leighton (1852–1922), exhibited at Messum's

History

The gallery was founded by David Messum in 1963.[1] The gallery exhibits contemporary art and work by British Impressionist, modern and figurative painters and sculptors. Messum’s has been renowned for promoting the work of the early Newlyn and St Ives painters. In 1985 the first comprehensive study of British Impressionism was published by Messum’s - ‘British Impressionism, A Garden of Bright Images’. The book was a recognition of the key status of this movement in British art. Messum’s was the first gallery to stage significant exhibitions of British Impressionism, and by the 1980s had developed a wide international following through a series of eminent shows.

Artists

Artists who have exhibited at the gallery include William Bowyer, Peter Brown, James Dodds, Rose Hilton, Kurt Jackson,[2] Edward Piper, John Piper[3] and Jeremy Annear.

Location

In 2012 a proposed development in Cork Street threatened to cause Messum's to move.[4][5] Messum's gallery in Cork Street is now the West End outpost of Messums Wiltshire brand founded in 2016 by Johnny Messum, and based at the tithe barn at Place Farm, Tisbury. It celebrates the best of artists, conceptual craft and the skill of the hand when applied to creativity across the ages.
