2021 Festival of World Cups

The 2021 Festival of World Cups was planned as a series of rugby league world cups held in England in the summer and autumn of 2021 as part of the build up to the men's Rugby League World Cup, women's Rugby League World Cup and wheelchair Rugby League World Cup which take place in England in October and November 2021. A majority of the tournaments forming the festival were postponed in August 2020 due to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The world cup organisers asked for expressions of interest for different tournaments in the summer of 2019 and received over 90 responses.[1] As of October 2019 only two tournaments have been finalised, a Physical Disability Rugby League World Cup will be held in Warrington and a Masters Rugby League World Cup will be hosted in Newcastle on Tyne.[2][3]

Anticipated other events were:[1]

  • the men's Emerging Nations World Championship and the inaugural women's Emerging Nations World Championship
  • men's and women's Student World Cup
  • men's and women's Armed Forces World Cup
  • men's Police World Cup

On 27 August 2021 the organising body announced the postponement of the festival due to fund raising and squad selection issues for the participating nations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] The tournaments affected are the student and armed forces competitions and the women's emerging nations championship. No new date has been set but the organisers still intend that the physical disability and the master's tournaments will go ahead as planned.[5]
