Al Freeman (artist)

Al Freeman (born in 1981 in Canada) is a New York–based artist.[1]

Education

Freeman received a BFA in 2005 from Concordia University in Montréal, and her MFA in 2010 from Yale University.[1]

Work

Freeman reproduces everyday items at an exaggerated scale, rendering them in puffy, tactile materials. But by presenting her polyester, cloth, and pleather works as partially deflated, she playfully imbues a beer can, a hammer, or a lava lamp with a message of subverted masculinity. Drained of their virility and enlarged to a ridiculous size, the objects are invested with a humor that satirizes the simulated coziness of runaway consumerism.[2]

In her Comparisons series, Freeman juxtaposes iconic artworks with images found from the deep waters of the internet.[3]

Solo exhibitions

Freeman is currently represented by 56 HENRY, which featured her in Cubicle in fall 2019. She also presented Pillows at Felix, Los Angeles, earlier that year, a reprisal of the exhibition first shown in 2017 at 56 HENRY.[1] Other solo shows include Even More Comparisons, NADA Miami (2018),[4] and More Comparisons, Bortolami Gallery, New York (2018).[2] Freeman also had solo exhibition at Auroras, Sao Paolo and Empajada, Puerto Rico.

Group exhibitions

Freeman participated in the group show Museum of Modern Art and Western Antiquities, Section II Department of Carving and Modeling: Form and Volume, at Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Lisbon (2019).[5]
