Alternatives (journal)

Alternatives: Global, Local, Political is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes papers in the field of international relations. The journal's editor is Lacin Idil Oztig (Yildiz Technical University). It has been in publication since 2005 and is currently published by SAGE Publications in association with Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.

Not to be confused with AlterNative or Alternatives: Turkish Journal of International Relations.

Scope

Alternatives aims to explore the possibilities of new forms of political practice and identity under increasingly global conditions. The journal promotes a range of critical, normative and interdisciplinary approaches to political, social, cultural and ecological developments.

Abstracting and indexing

Alternatives is abstracted and indexed in, among other databases: SCOPUS, and the Social Sciences Citation Index. According to the Journal Citation Reports, its 2017 impact factor is 0.321, ranking it 76 out of 85 journals in the category 'International Relations'.[1]

Controversy

In 2020, Alternatives published a controversial journal article claiming that "International Relations (IR) scholars uncritically accept the official narrative regarding the events of 9/11 and refuse to examine the massive body of evidence generated by the 9/11 truth movement."[2] A number of scholars reacted on social media to criticize the claims made in the abstract, the editor's decision to publish and the editorial board's silence. In a public statement addressing this controversy, the editor of Alternatives defended the publication of the article on free speech grounds.[3]
