Altius Architects

Altius Architecture, Inc. is an architecture and interior design firm based in Toronto, Ontario that specializes in the design and construction of custom homes[1] and cottages.[2] The office is currently involved in projects in Canada and the Middle East. Taking cues from the landscape their designs are derived from site features and solar orientation, and use a sustainable design process.[3] Their projects combine elements of Canadian vernacular architecture with an emphasis on craftsmanship and materials. The firm's designs focus on sensitivity to site, thoughtful interiors, and innovative design.[4]

History

Altius was founded by four partners, Cathy Garrido, Trevor McIvor and Graham Smith, and David Flynn, who met as students at the University of Waterloo, School of Architecture in the 1990s. Altius Design Studio was founded in 1998, and became Altius Architecture, Inc. in 2002.[5]

In 2005, David Flynn left the firm.

The Ontario Association of Architects selected Altius for the 2007 Best Emerging Practice Award in recognition for their effective strategies and entrepreneurial creativity in a firm that has been in practice for 5 years or less.[6] Also in 2007, the three partners of Altius Architecture Inc purchased 49% of Sustain Design Studio, and their flagship miniHome, a line of sustainable prefabricated homes.

In 2009, the three partners acquired 100% of Sustain Design Studio and began expanding the miniHome into the California market.[7]

In 2016, one of the partners, Trevor McIvor, left the firm.

Interested in integrating their architectural practice with the traditional role of building, the firm's two partners, Cathy Garrido and Graham Smith, take a strongly central role in projects, acting as construction managers as well as architectural designers.

In 2012, Altius participated in the public exhibition Big Enough at the Toronto Harbourfront Centre. The exhibition was investigating the idea of space in the city, by posing the question: how much space do we really need?[8]
