Historically, Alba is the second Middle-Eastern aluminium producer after IRALCO, and also Alba is the largest aluminium producer next to Dubal in that region.

The company produces a range of aluminium products to include T-Ingots, 10Kg/22.5Kg Standard Ingots, Properzi Ingots, Rolling Slabs, Extrusion Billets, Sows and Liquid metal. About half of Alba's aluminium is sold to Bahrain's downstream industry while the rest is exported to countries within the GCC, the Middle East, Europe, Americas, Far-East and South Asia.[3]

In 2019, the company set an all time production record in its history with 1,365,005 metric tonnes.[4]

History

Alba was officially incorporated in 1968 and began operations in 1971 with an annual capacity of 120,000 metric tonnes per annum.[5] After modernisation and expansion works the smelter's capacity rose to 450,000 tonnes in 1992. In March 2005, Alba commissioned a new reduction line, Line 5, which increased the company's capacity to over 860,000 tonnes of aluminium at that time. Today, thanks to its newly inaugurated Line 6, Alba's production capacity is beyond 1.5M mtpa.

Ownership

The shareholders of Alba are Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (69.38%),[6] SABIC Investment Company (20.62%) and the General Public (10%).

The company went public in 2010, launched its first IPO, and was listed on the Bahrain Bourse and the London Stock Exchange, under the symbol "ALBH".[7]

Plant

Schematic of production process

The Alba plant comprises six reduction lines, three cast houses, four carbon plants, a Petroleum Coke Calciner and Seawater desalination Plant, 11 fume treatment plants, a marine terminal and five power stations. The plant also features a 13 hectare oasis, with more than 15,000 trees and shrubs and an artificial lake.

Product Range

Alba's production
Standard Ingots
Extrusion Billets

10KG Standard Ingots

10 kg Standard Ingots in foundry alloys are produced using state-of-the-art casting and metal treatment systems, exceeding the most stringent of quality requirements. They are mainly used by the automotive industry for manufacturing high quality wheels and other chassis components. 10 kg Standard Ingots in P1020 alloy are re-melted to produce a wide variety of end products covering the entire spectrum of aluminium applications.

22.5KGStandard Ingots

22.5 kg Standard Ingots in foundry alloys are produced using state of the art casting and metal treatment systems, exceeding the most stringent of quality requirements. They are mainly used by the automotive industry for manufacturing high quality wheels and other chassis components. 22.5 kg Standard Ingots in P1020 alloy are re-melted to produce a wide variety of end products covering the entire spectrum of aluminium applications.

Rolling Slabs

Rolling slabs are suitable for finished products such as ultra-light gauge foils as well as for cookware foil used for food wrapping. In lithographic applications, they are used in producing offset printing plates, and are also used in packaging, transport and aviation industries, construction and general engineering applications including paneling, flooring and roofing among others.

Properzi Bars

Alba Properzi bars foundry alloys are produced using state-of-the-art casting and metal treatment systems, exceeding the most stringent of quality requirements. They are mainly used by the automotive industry for manufacturing high quality wheels and other chassis components.

Extrusion Billets

Our extrusion ingots are capable of being extruded into a range of profiles from soft to high strength applications and good surface finish for value added finishing applications such as anodizing and powder coating. Soft alloy applications include architectural applications, as well as building and kitchen sections. Hard alloys are used in a variety of engineering and transport applications.

LME Sows

P1020 and higher grade LME Sows are conforming to London Metal Exchange standards and are used in many re-melting and casting applications including fabrication into various end-products such as pressure cookers and the facades of skyscrapers.

T-Ingots

T-ingots in foundry alloys are produced using state-of-theart casting and metal treatment systems, exceeding the most stringent of quality requirements. They are mainly used by the automotive industry for manufacturing high quality wheels and other chassis components. T-ingots in P1020 alloy are re-melted to produce a wide variety of end products covering the entire spectrum of aluminium applications.

Liquid Metal

Liquid metal can be converted into a range of value-added products, primary aluminium based EC rods, alloy rods, and wire and alloy ingots. Other applications include aluminium powder and aluminium pellets, aluminium wires for electrical and mechanical use, curved line conductors, aluminium clad steel (ACS) wires for transmission lines, solid conductors and aluminium casting for cars and trucks wheels.

Calcined Coke

Alba is one of only two smelters in the world to have a dedicated coke calciner, its production capacity is nearly 550,000 metric tonnes per annum.

Anodes

Alba has three carbon plants that produce about 550,000 metric tonnes of anodes every year. Carbon anodes are produced from calcined petroleum coke and coal tar pitch.[8]

Power

With its five natural gas turbine power stations having a total power generating capacity of 3,643 MW ISO, equivalent to the average power consumed in Bahrain as a whole, Alba's energy needs are fulfilled independently.[9]

Water

Alba's seawater desalination plant was commissioned in 2001. It utilises waste heat from the calcining process to generate steam for the production and supply of 41,000 cubic metres per day of potable water.

Environment Conservation

Alba has invested more than US$685 million [10] environmental conservation and earned international praise and recognition for being committed to implementing highest environmental standards across the organisation.

Line 6 Expansion Project

Alba’s Line 6 Expansion Project was inaugurated by His Majesty King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa the King of the Kingdom of Bahrain on 24 November 2019. Line 6 Expansion Project has made Alba the world’s largest smelter ex-China. Potline 6 will boost Alba’s per-annum production by 540,000 metric tonnes, bringing Alba’s total production capacity to 1.54 million metric tonnes per year.[11]
