Amaala

AMAALA is a luxury tourism project on Saudi Arabia’s northwestern coast that is inspired by the Red Sea. Composed of three communities based on the pillars of Art & Culture; Wellness & Sports; and Sun, Sea & Lifestyle, and rooted in philanthropy, the project will come to life as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 roadmap.

Named after the Arabic word for 'hope' and the ancient Sanskrit word for 'purity', AMAALA targets the world’s top 2.5 million ultra-high net worth travellers, offering them meaningful, purpose-driven and immersive experiences that aim to safeguard the planet’s natural resources. Set within the Prince Mohammad bin Salman Natural Reserve, the development will offer an immersive experience for travellers and residents that is underpinned by a strong focus on environmental preservation, conservation of marine life and sustainable practices.

The unique heritage and unspoiled landscape of AMAALA will allow travellers to immerse themselves in the finest wellness, art, culture, sports and fitness offerings. Being close to major destinations in the region, AMAALA will become the heart of The Riviera of the Middle East.

In January 2021, AMAALA appointed John Pagano as its new CEO replacing Nicholas Naples.[1]

AMAALA’s communities
  • Wellness and Sports at Triple Bay: A holistic wellness retreat with luxury medical and wellness resorts, and a range of recreational activities. Triple Bay will also be home to a sports performance academy, an equestrian resort and polo academy, and world-class sports facilities including golf, tennis, equestrian, polo, camel-racing, and falconry.
  • Art & Culture at The Coastal Development: Home to leading arts and cultural events, it will feature a cultural district comprising a museum of contemporary art, film festival venue, performing arts venues, and a Biennale park.
  • Sun, Sea & Lifestyle at The Island: One of the world’s most exclusive enclaves when completed, it will offer exquisitely designed Arabic botanical gardens showcasing works of art, sculptures, and breath-taking landscapes, all surrounding beautifully appointed private residences.

Sustainability

Sustainable principles and practices permeate all aspects of AMAALA. With an operational zero-carbon footprint as its goal, the destination has more than 15 sustainability criteria, not least being the requirement for developers to adhere to bespoke regulations based on world-class sustainability standards and best practices.

The sustainability programme includes provisions for:

  • Full solar energy farm – one of the largest in the GCC – that will supply the entire development
  • Robust waste management and recycling processes
  • Transport powered by renewable energy
  • Landscaping featuring species indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula
  • Organic farms, harnessing sustainable farming techniques, to supply ample local produce for guests and employees
  • Dedicated desalination plant that has zero impact on the coral reefs
  • Treatment of wastewater to be reused in agriculture
  • Organic waste to be used in agriculture, including Triple Bay’s organic farm
  • Only biodegradable materials will be used within the resort

Preservation of marine life

The Marine Life Institute at AMAALA, alongside partners, will integrate local and international marine life conservation, research and education, developing oceanographic and marine life research, and conservation initiatives, which can then be applied to Saudi Arabia’s waters, and the world’s seas. Through its partnerships, AMAALA have identified and is committed to four key areas of joint exploration:

  • Coral reef management
  • Iconic species protection
  • Marine Protected Areas (MPA) enforcement
  • Containing plastic pollution
