Anastasia Ailamaki

Anastasia Ailamaki is a Professor[1] of Computer Sciences at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and the Director of the Data-Intensive Applications and Systems (DIAS) lab. She is also the co-founder of RAW Labs SA, a Swiss company developing real-time analytics infrastructures for heterogeneous big data. Formerly, she was an associate professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science.[2]

Anastasia's research interests are in the broad area of database systems and applications, with emphasis on database system behavior on modern processor hardware and disks. Her projects aim at building systems to strengthen the interaction between the database software and the underlying hardware and I/O devices. She is also working on automated schema design and computational database support for scientific applications, as well as storage device modeling, performance prediction, and internet query caching.

Anastasia studied computer science at the University of Patras, and earned her first master's degree at the Technical University of Crete followed by a second diploma from the University of Rochester. She received her Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000.[3]

She is the recipient of ten Best Paper and Best Demo awards and was awarded Young Investigator Award by the European Science Foundation. In 2013 she received an ERC Consolidator Award for the ViDa: Transforming raw data into information through virtualization project. She is an IEEE and an ACM Fellow, a member of Academia Europaea, and the Vice Chair of the Special Interest Group of Management of Data (SIGMOD) within the Association for Computing Machinery.[4] She is a member of the Expert Network of the World Economic Forum and CRA-W mentor.

Anastasia is the author of over 200 peer-reviewed articles published in such journals as the Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research, VLDB, SIGMOD, ACM Transactions on Database Systems.

Honors and Awards

  1. ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award (2019): the SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award is given for innovative and highly significant contributions of enduring value to the development, understanding, or use of database systems.
  2. NEMITSAS Prize 2018 in Computer Science: the President of the Republic of Cyprus, on behalf of the Takis and Louki Nemitsas Foundation, presents the Nemitsas Prize to one laureate for contributions in his/her scientific field which have been recognized at an international level.
  3. IEEE Fellow (since 01/2018): “For contributions to hardware-conscious database systems and scientific data management”: IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.
  4. ACM Fellow (since 01/2015): “For contributions to the design, implementation, and evaluation of modern database systems”: ACM's most prestigious member grade recognizes the top 1% of ACM members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community.

  7. European Young Investigator Award from the European Science Foundation, 2007: EurYI is a 1M Euro research grant which recognizes excellent track record and the applicant’s potential to become world class leader in their chosen field of research.
  8. Finmeccanica fellowship from Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon, 2007: endowed in 1989, the Italian Finmeccanica Fellowship "acknowledges promising young faculty members in the field of computer science".
  9. Sloan Research Fellowship, February 2005: the Sloan Research Fellowship awards are intended to enhance the careers of the very best young faculty members in specified fields of science.
  10. NSF Faculty Early CAREER Award (CAREER), 2002: the CAREER program replaced the Presidential Young Investigator (PYI) program in 1995. Awardees are selected from among the most meritorious junior investigators funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
