Andrea Canepari

Andrea Canepari (born 7 June 1972 in Pavia, Italy) is an Italian diplomat and the present Ambassador to Santo Domingo .

Life and diplomatic career

He graduated in Economics at Bocconi University in 1996 and in Law at the University of Parma in 1998. In 1999 he earned a Master of Laws at the University of Pennsylvania Law School with a scholarship offered by the Foundation “F.Gianani”[1] (prize ABI, Associazione Bancaria Italiana). From 1996 to 1998, he also completed a teaching fellowship at the Comparative Law Institute of the “Bocconi” University in Milan. He began his diplomatic career in 1999 where he was assigned to the Balkans desk. Later he was Chief of the Economic and Commercial Office at the Embassy of Italy in Ankara, when Italy at the time was Turkey's second commercial partner. From 2006 to 2010, he was assigned, at the Embassy of Italy in Washington D.C. to U.S. internal politics and liaison with U.S. Congress. He was also assigned to follow Barack Obama's first Presidential campaign. In 2010, he assumed the position of Counselor and Diplomatic Advisor to the State Minister within the Italian Presidency for the Council of Ministers Protezione Civile. From 2011 to 2013, he was Alternate Director of the North America Division, Political Affairs and Security Bureau, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From August 2013 to July 2017, he was Consul General of Italy in Philadelphia (U.S.A.), with consular jurisdiction for the States of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey (southern counties), North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia. In November 2016 he received the Global Philadelphia Award from Temple University for raising awareness about Italian cultural contributions to the Mid-Atlantic Region of the U.S.A. He promoted initiatives such as “Ciao Philadelphia”, the month-long celebration of Italian culture with over seventy events held throughout the U.S., bringing together prominent cultural institutions to celebrate Italy and promoting opportunities for economic and cultural collaboration, as it was recognized by the American and Italian press.[2][3][4] In 2017 he was nominated Ambassador of Italy to the Dominican Republic.[5][6]
