Plot

Rekha (Mala Sinha) lives with her widowed mother (Dulari). Five-year-old Lata (Sashikala) daughter of Rekha's mother's friend comes to stay with them with her maid as her parents die. Shankar (Manoj Kumar) and Rekha are childhood friends. Shankar moves to Kanpur in childhood and comes back home at young age after becoming the doctor. Rekha is sweet and simple on one side and Lata is very arrogant and hot minded on other side they both are bought up together. Shankar and Rekha fall in love. Shankar asks for Rekha's hand for marriage to Rekha's mother which she happily agrees. On other side Lata, too, falls for Shankar. Lata with help of her maid cunningly locks herself with Shankar in her bedroom and claims of having affair with Shankar. Rekha's mom believes in Lata's lies and even Rekha can't do anything about it. Shocked Rekha's mom gets ill and Rekha for her mother's last wish asks Shankar to marry Lata. Shankar refuses initially but after more force from Rekha he finally agrees. Shankar and Lata marry. Rekha's mom dies leaving behind burden of loan which she had taken for Lata's marriage. Rekha sells her house and belongings to repay loan and moves in with her servant Foghat (Agha) whom she calls mama. Lata and Shankar marriage does not go smooth because of Lata's bad nature and results in frequent fight between them. Rekha gets job and lives normal life. Shankar tries to meet Rekha but she avoids him. One day Rekha gets ill and Shankar being doctor mama calls him for Rekha's treatment. Lata suspects that Shankar and Rekha are still having affair again plans scheme and forces Rekha to move in to her house. Rekha first hesitates but finally she agrees and moves in with her mama. One night when Shankar and mama are not at home Lata's maid puts poison in Rekha's glass of water which unknowingly Lata drinks. In morning Lata is found dead. Case moves to court as Rekha being accused of Lata's murder. There is courtroom drama and in end Lata's maid meets accident and confesses her crime in hospital and Shankar and Rekha get along again.
