Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration

The Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration (SAF/SP) is a civilian position in the United States Department of the Air Force that is appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate. This position is established under Title 10 US Code Section 8016. The Assistant Secretary reports to the Secretary of the Air Force.

On December 20, 2019, Mr Shawn Barnes, Deputy Assistant Secretary, in the absence of a political appointee, was performing the role of the ASAF. Barnes will continue to perform the role of the ASAF until the Biden administration makes an appointment likely in the first quarter of 2021 [1]

The Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration will serve as the single service acquisition executive (SAE) and the Senior Procurement Executive for space programs in the Department of the Air Force.

History

The position of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration was created in the NDAA National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 on 20 December 2019 to oversee and direct the Space and Missile Center, Space Rapid Capabilities Office and Space Development Center.[2] The position was directed to stand up as the Service Acquisition Executive (SAE) in 2022. Until this date the position was to provide advise to the existing SAE for space programs the ASAF for Acquisition, Technology & Logistics (SAF/AQ). The office of the ASAF for Space Acquisition and Integration was created from the Office of the Principal Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force for Space.[3][4]
