Aufschrei

#Aufschrei ("yelp") is a German hashtag which went viral on the social media platform Twitter in 2013. The hashtag raised awareness about Sexism in Germany after controversial remarks of FDP politician Rainer Brüderle.[1]

Progression of the debate

On January 24, 2013 the German Magazine Stern published an article written by Laura Himmelreich about Brüderle who was a front runner of the FDP for the Bundestag election in 2013. In this article she claimed that Brüderle sexually assaulted her.

After the Twitter user Nicole von Horst tweeted about her own experiences of Sexism, a number of women, including feminist Anne Wizorek, established the hashtag #aufschrei. This led to a substantial number of tweets from women describing everyday experiences of unwanted comments and assault, which they considered to be sexist. Between January 24 and January 27, 2013, more than 57,000 tweets containing the hashtag were posted, although not all of them in support of the cause. The sexism debate was consequently re-ignited in both print and digital media, as well as during talk shows hosted by Markus Lanz, Maybrit Illner, and Günther Jauch, and also in international news coverage with Focus describing the issue as "having spilled over to the USA". For example, the New York times reported about and commentated on the events in several news articles.
