He is also among the most popular streamers on Twitch, operating the seventh most-followed Twitch channel in the world.[2][3]

Early life

Raúl Álvarez Genes[4] was born in Badalona, Catalonia, Spain on 5 November 1988.[5][6] Prior to his career as a YouTuber, Álvarez worked at a graphic arts and bookbinding company for nine years starting at the age of sixteen.[7]

Career

Álvarez joined YouTube in 2006.[7] His online alias, AuronPlay, derives from the name of Auron, a character in the video game Final Fantasy X.[8] In a 2015 interview with Risto Mejide, he explained that he began making YouTube videos as a hobby, and makes videos criticising internet videos to "transform them into something funny".[9][10] He initially recorded videos when he left work, covering his face with a mask in videos to avoid identification. He dedicated himself to uploading videos full-time after leaving his job as a printing shop worker.[7]

With fellow YouTuber Wismichu, Álvarez also performed shows at theatres under the production company YouPlanet.[11] In 2016, the two YouTubers published a video which involved making prank calls to Spanish firewood companies. The video led to a barrage of telephone calls to various firewood companies and a complaint made by several of the companies to the National Police.[7][12][13]

In a June 2019 Twitter correspondence, Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, named Álvarez as El Salvador's "minister of YouTube" by "Presidential Decree".[1][14][15]

In September 2019, news media outlets reported that FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu had filed a police complaint towards Álvarez in October 2018. The complaint concerned tweets made by Álvarez in 2017, "for uttering comments against Barcelona, the player (Neymar) and the president."[16][17][18] Álvarez appeared in court at the end of 2018, although the judge decided not to formally admit the complaint. Álvarez and Bartomeu reconciled in December 2019.[19][20]

In October 2020, Forbes Spain included Álvarez on their list of the top 100 influencers in Spain for the year.[21][22]

Other ventures

Álvarez has published several autobiographical books,[23][24] the first of which he presented at the 2016 Madrid Book Fair.[25]

In March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Álvarez donated masks to the Institut Català de la Salut, part of the Catalan health system.[26][27]
