Avis Newman

Avis Newman (born 1946, London) is an English painter and sculptor.

Newman's drawings and large un-stretched canvases document her contemplative and intuitive investigation of the subconscious. Since the early 1980s she has been primarily associated with large-scale, minimalist drawings on un-stretched canvas - usually pinned directly to the gallery walls for display.[1] Avis had her first important exhibition at Matt's Gallery, London, in 1982.[2]

Newman was a Professor in Drawing at The Centre for Drawing at University of the Arts, Wimbledon between 2006 and 2009. Her work has been the subject of numerous national and international shows including The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, 1988,[3] the Lisson Gallery, London 1998; The Drawing Centre, New York, 2002; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney 2003; Saatchi Gallery, London 1994; Camden Arts Centre, London 1996; The National Gallery in Prague, 1999; The Moscow Biennale 2013; and was included in ‘On Line: Drawing through the Twentieth Centaury’ at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2010.[4]

Her works are included in major collections including the Tate Gallery[5] and the Metropolitan Museum.[6]

She is Professor at Wimbledon School of Art and Lecturer at the Rijks Academy, Amsterdam.[2]
