Bengal Provincial Railway
Bengal Provincial Railway was a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) Narrow Gauge railway from Tarakeswar to Magra, in Indian state of West Bengal.
History
The Bengal Provincial Railway opened in 1895 from Tarakeswar on the East Indian Railway to Magra, which was on the East Indian Railway broad gauge. Built by local interests, the line was 32 miles (51 km) long, until extended a further 2 miles (3.2 km) to Tribeni in 1904. The railway mostly used small 2-4-0T locomotives. There also was a 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long branch line from Dashghora (Now Srikrishnapur) to Jamalpur. The Bengal Provincial Railway had 42.5 miles (68.4 km) long 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) Narrow Gauge railway track.
Closure
Increasing losses post World War 2 led to its closure in 1956.[1]
Restoration
In Railway budget 2010-11, restoration of 32 miles (51 km) long Tarakeswar to Magra section as 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) Broad Gauge railway line was proposed. The work is sanctioned in 2010-11. at a cost of 365.17 Cr. Also Tarakeswar– Furfura Sharif 13.5 miles (21.7 km) New Line project work was sanctioned in year 2012-13 at a cost of Rs. 162.37 Cr. Final location survey completed. Alignment plan for 12.5 miles (20.1 km) approved. Land plan under finalisation. Formation and Bridge work completed in Railway land. 219 hectares of land will be required. Formation and bridge work completed in Railway land. Work could not be started due to non availability of land. However the work has been kept in abeyance by Railway board.
