Bijou Theatre, Melbourne, from 1890

The first theatre, built in 1876, was originally named the Academy of Music, and was renamed the Bijou Theatre in 1880.[3] It was destroyed by fire on Easter Monday in 1889.[4]

A new, larger Bijou Theatre was built on the site, opening in 1890. The new theatre seated around 2,000 across three levels.[5] The theatre was further renovated and altered in 1907.[6]
