Spears's official recording career began in 1966 when she was first signed to a temporary recording contract with United Artists. In 1968 she signed with Capitol Records, where in 1969 her single "Mr. Walker, It's All Over" peaked at #4 on the Billboard Magazine Hot Country Singles chart. Her follow-up singles, such as "Stepchild" and "Midnight Train", were not as successful and after undergoing vocal surgery in 1972, she left the label. In 1974 she signed with United Artists Records, with her second single "Blanket on the Ground" reaching #1 on the Billboard country chart and #78 on the Billboard Hot 100. Spears had three additional top ten hits on the label including "What I've Got in Mind" and "Misty Blue", which both peaked at #5 respectively. Spears also had success on the UK Singles Chart with these singles. In 1981 Spears left her record label, but continued sporadically recording for other labels in the 1980s and early 1990s.
