Background

Black./Womyn: Conversations with Lesbians of African Descent was conceived in 2001 from the experiences faced by the director as a Black lesbian. The first official interview was conducted in late 2002. Tiona was awarded a Leeway Art 7 Change $2500 grant in 2007, to assist with the completion of the documentary. In her message, McClodden states that she hopes “this film will provide a way for Black lesbians like me to see each other and be affirmed in our existence as a powerful and strong social force with important opinions.”[5]

Reception

The documentary currently has a 7.2/10 rating based on 6 reviewers on the IMDb site.[6]

According to Afrolez production blog, the documentary “provokes honest, progressive dialogue and critical thinking among people in general-and Black lesbians in particular-about how Black lesbians are viewed and affected by society.”[7]

In 2008, the documentary was awarded the Audience Award for Best Documentary Film (Feature) at the 2008 Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival. Additionally, the documentary was awarded Best Of NewFest: New York LGBT Film Festival.[8]
