Black Sports Magazine

Black Sports Magazine was a monthly magazine that launched in April 1971 in New York City and closed later that decade.[1][2][3]

The magazine was the first major sports magazine aimed specifically at African Americans.[4] The magazine was the brainchild of Allan P. Barron, who became President and Editor. Barron teamed with William L. Doneghy, who acted as Vice-President and Controller.[3][5] In 1971, Bryant Gumbel became editor of the magazine, leaving the following year.[6][7][8]

The magazine had low circulation and limited success, and ultimately was forced to close. The final issue was published in June 1978.[1]
