Buddleja Lo & Behold 'Purple Haze'

Buddleja 'Purple Haze' (Lo & Behold series), sold as Purple Chip in the UK, is a sterile hybrid cultivar derived from the crossing of 'Miss Ruby' and clone no. NC2003-4: 'Honeycomb' × (Nanho Purple™ × lindleyana), by Dr Dennis Werner and Layne Snelling at the Sandhills Research Station , Jackson Springs, North Carolina, USA, and released to commerce in 2010.[1]

Description

'Purple Haze' makes a dense, compact mound, 0.8  m high by 1.2 m wide. The semi-pendulous stems bear fragrant inflorescences comprising loose, pendulous terminal panicles, 20 cm in length, comprising < 85 purple flowers, the corolla tube 15 mm in length and 5.5 mm wide at the apex, reflecting its lindleyana heritage. The mature leaves are elliptic, 10.5 cm long by 2.6 cm wide, green above and grey-green below.[1]

Cultivation

'Purple Haze' is cultivated in North America, and has been introduced to the UK where it is sold as 'Purple Chip'. The shrub demands exposure to full sun, and a well-drained soil. Propagation is achieved by rooting softwood cuttings during the growing season.[1] USDA zones 5–7.
