Carta Worldwide is a Canadian software company that offers digital transaction processing, specializing in mobile and prepaid transactions. In addition to their Canadian headquarters in Toronto, Carta has offices in London and Casablanca. Carta operates internationally, providing financial technology and mobile payment software.

Carta's clients include Vodafone,[1] Banco Sabadell,[2] Westpac NZ,[3] and Novum Bank.[4] The company also partners with MasterCard[5] and DCR Strategies/TruCash[6]

Carta was the world's first processor to complete integration to MasterCard MOTAPS, enabling rapid deployment for NFC programs.[7] Their Charlottetown, PEI, data centre is the only secure third party issuer processing data host for financial services in Canada.[8]

Carta was part of the development team that produced ApplePay and was the first processor in the world to perform an ApplePay transaction.

History

Carta was founded in 2006 in Oakville, Ontario by Robert Elensky.[9] Company's headquarters were relocated in 2007 to Switzerland with service company offices were opened in Hong Kong and London, UK. Carta's Oakville office continued to operate as the company's research centre. Mr. Elensky served as Carta's CEO and Chairman until exiting the company in 2009.

Carta's CEO Brian Semkiw, is the co-founder of Rand Worldwide which had 1500 employees and had secured revenues of approximately $500 million by the time it was privatized in 2007.[10] Profit Magazine named Semkiw "Entrepreneur of the Year" in 1996.[11]

On September 15, 2014, Carta Worldwide closed the first tranche of a $12 million Series D venture round. Led by Toronto-based merchant bank Difference Capital and DC Thomson (UK), the $7-million investment adds to the more than $50 million the company has invested in its digital transaction processing platform.[12][13]

In 2015 Carta partnered with Visa Inc. and Vodafone to enable contactless bank card payments.[14] The Vodafone wallet uses a hybrid of a hardware SIM card and cloud-based tokenization.[15] Also in 2015, Carta Worldwide has named Elizabeth Duke as new Vice President of Business Development.[16]

In May 2020, Carta Worldwide announced a change in global leadership to drive the next phase of entrepreneurial growth. Peter Kaju became Chief Executive Officer effectively on June 1 , 2020. Paul Hill leaves to begin the next phase of his life. Paul has developed a tradition of shared interest, partnership and creativity in Carta since its accession in 2018.[17]

In November 2020, they were acquired by Mogo Finance for 10 million Mogo shares valuing the transaction at $75 million. CAD.[18]
