Chain (caste)

The Chain, sometimes also pronounced as Chai, a cultivating and fishing caste of Bihar and Central Bengal, probably an offshoot from some non-Aryan tribe. The chains are found in Oudh, where Mr. Carnegy connects them with the Tharu, Raji, Nat, and other broken and gypsy-like tribes inhabiting the base of the Himalayas. This community is also lived in West Bengali, Jharkhand, Bihar. They are fighting for ST status since long time. According to The Imperial Gazetteer of India, vol. 9, chains belonging to the santhal par gana are categorised under aboriginal tribes written in page no 243. The Bihar government has recommended to ministry of tribal affairs to bring chains under scheduled tribe on 05/09/15.
