Charlie Mackesy

Charlie Mackesy (born 1962) is a British artist and the author of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.

The book has sold over 1.4 million copies and spent 55 weeks on the Sunday Times Bestsellers List top ten.[1] His book was selected as the Waterstones Book of the Year 2019 and was shortlisted for the British Book Awards in 2020.[2] Mackesy was contacted by an editor who had seen his drawings on Instagram and subsequently published with her on Ebury.[3]

Mackesy had been a cartoonist for The Spectator and an illustrator for Oxford University Press.[1] He also worked with Richard Curtis for Comic Relief.[1] He is a former atheist who has 'found Jesus' and sees his work as a way to "introduce God to the people he loves."[4][5] Many of his paintings have a religious theme.[6] He was selected to work on Nelson Mandela's Unity Series project, re-imagining the drawings that Mandela made.[7][8]

Personal life

Mackesy grew up in Northumberland, and went to boarding school when he was seven.[1] He lives in London and in Suffolk where he looks after his mother with his sister.[1][9]
