The journal was established in 1994 by Roger T. Ames, Professor Emeritus (University of Hawaii) who was at that time director of the UH Center for Chinese Studies, where its editorial office was located. China Review International is published quarterly by the University of Hawaii Press. Its first electronic edition appeared in 2000 on Project MUSE.
