Chinna Mapillai

Chinna Mapillai (transl. Younger Son-in-law) is a 1993 Indian Tamil-language comedy film directed and co-written by Santhana Bharathi. The film stars Prabhu and Sukanya. It was released on 14 January 1993. The film was remade in Telugu as Chinna Alludu (1993), in Kannada as Coolie Raja (1999) and twice in Hindi as Coolie No.1 (in 1995 and in 2020).

Plot

Thangavel is a coolie in a bus stand. Ambalavanan, a marriage broker wants him to pose as a rich man from Singapore and marry Janaki to break the arrogance and her money-minded father Periya Pannai. Periya Pannai finds out that he is a coolie, but Thangavel brilliantly lies that it is his younger brother. How Thangavel reforms both of them forms the story.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, with lyrics written by Vaali and Gangai Amaran.[2] The song "Vennilavu Kothipathanu" is set in Madhyamavati raga,[3] and "Kadhorum Lolakku" is set in Natabhairavi.[4]

Release and reception

Chinna Mapillai was released on 14 January 1993.[5] The Indian Express wrote, "Chinna Maappille is a hilarious, racy comedy of the Wodehousian sort with engaging situations well directed by Santhana Bharathi".[6]

Remakes

The film was remade in Telugu as Chinna Alludu (1993), in Kannada as Coolie Raja (1999),[7] and twice in Hindi with the title Coolie No. 1: in 1995 and in 2020.[8]
