The direct ancestor of the Chongqing dog is the native breeds from the regions adjacent to Chongqing, these being Dazhu, Hechuan, Yongchuan, Lingshui and Guanan and these are collectively known as "Chongqing Dog". The Chongqing dog was developed for hunting in the mountains of East Sichuan.[2] Due to urbanisation they lost their major purpose so their population declined rapidly, however the breed was restored in the 1970’s and have become a popular utility dog since.[2][3]
