Christiane Löhr

Christiane Löhr (born 1965) is a contemporary German artist, who lives and works in Germany and Italy. Her sculptures, installations, and drawings are created with organic materials including horsehair, seeds, tree blossoms, and other elements from nature.

Life

Born in Wiesbaden in 1965, Loehr studied Egyptology, Archeology, Classics and History at the University of Bonn and Art Education and German studies at the University of Mainz before enrolling at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where she was a master student of Jannis Kounellis. She lives and works in Cologne, Germany and Prato, Italy.

Work

Löhr is best known for her sculptures and installations that utilize organic elements as delicate construction materials. Some of these include horsehair, airborne seeds, tree blossoms, plant stalks, and burrs. Löhr transforms these elements into elaborate and ordered structures, translating the sensitivity and fragility of the chosen material into volumetric forms. She uses non-organic substances minimally, manipulating her work according to the given attributes of the chosen material, whether it is biological or foreign. Man-made objects such as needles and hairnets can sometimes be seen in her sculptures, but utilized in ways that call attention to their basic form; their individual structure utilized just as sensitively and individually as the seeds, stalks, or animal hair.

Löhr also creates drawings on paper inspired by the same elements of nature, using pencil, ink, or oil pastel to continue her reorganization of the natural substances in her vocabulary.

Löhr has exhibited extensively in Europe and Asia, including at the 49th Biennale di Venezia. Her solo exhibition at the Villa Menafoglio Litta Panza in Varese, Italy, in 2010, was the last exhibition conceived by the acclaimed collector Giuseppe Panza. She has had both solo and group exhibitions of her work in the United States, including at the Museum of Arts and Design and Jason McCoy Gallery in New York City.
