In the 2018 general elections he was initially excluded from the Democratic Party lists; however, at a later time he was a candidate for the Chamber of Deputies in the uninominal constituency of Sassuolo (the college in which Gianni Cuperlo had previously been indicated, but then the latter's resignation). However he was defeated by the center-right candidate Benedetta Fiorini;[2] he was therefore not elected to the Parliament.
