Comac (youth movement)

Comac (short for Change, Optimisme, Marxisme, Activisme, Creativiteit in Dutch[1] and Changement, Optimisme, Marxisme, Activisme, Créativité in French[2]) is the youth wing of the Belgian leftist political party, the Workers' Party of Belgium (WPB). The movement is divided into 11 local sections: VUB, ULB, Leuven, Antwerp, Ghent, Saint-Louis, Louvain-la-Neuve, Mons, Namur, Charleroi and Liège. It is not only active in the different universities, but also in a number of hogescholen and has several community organizing projects. Comac is a pan-Belgian youth movement which brings young people from Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels together. It is not necessary to be a member of the WPB to join.

History

Comac is a result of the 2003 merger of the Leninist MML, Mouvement marxiste leniniste, and Marxistisch-Leninistische Beweging (MLB),[3] which were active at universities, and Rebelle or Rode Jeugd, who were active in the secondary schools. In addition to its student activism, Comac was also active in the secondary schools for a while, but this function has more recently been taken over by the WPB's youth movement RedFox.
