This role is appointed by the Governor General in Council (the Cabinet of Canada),[4] on the recommendation of the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry,[3] to hold office during pleasure for a term of five years.[4] Konstantinos Georgaras began serving in this role on an acting basis as of September 11, 2020.[1]

Responsibilities

As the Commissioner of Patents and the Registrar of Trademarks, this role is responsible for administering laws relevant to granting patents and trademarks.[5][6] As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of CIPO, this official is responsible for the leadership, direction and strategy of the organization, and representing the organization on Canada's behalf on the domestic and international stage.[1] The CEO is also responsible for overseeing the services provided by CIPO, including the dissemination of information on intellectual property.[1]
