Concepció Zendrera Tomás

Concepció Zendrera Tomás (Barcelona, 15 November 1919 – 30 July 2020), also written as Conxita Zendrera, was a Spanish editor and translator known for, among others, translating in Spanish the Belgian comic strips of Tintin, written by Hergé.

Biography

She was the eldest daughter of Josep Zendrera Fecha (Barcelona, 1894-1969), founder of Editorial Joventut. In 1944 she took over the children's and youth division of the company, until 1992. During this period she translated numerous works into Spanish. Among others she translated the àlbums de Tintín, which her father discovered in 1956 during a congress of publishers in Bologna (Italy). Zendrera personally was in charge of the translation into Spanish of Tintin; Joaquim Ventalló translated the entire series in Catalan, beginning in 1964. She was also responsible for the acquisition of rights for the works of Enid Blyton and albums of Mitsumasa Anno.

In 2019, Zendrera turned 100 years old, the Catalan Association of Tintinaires (Associació Catalana de Tintinaires) published a biographical comic entitled Com Tintín va arribar al nostre país (translated: How Tintin came to our country).[1][2][3][4] Coinciding with the celebration of her centenary, she donated part of her collection of children’s books to the Humanities Library of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.[5]

Zendera died 30 July 2020, at the age of 100.[6]
