White's videos and content has evolved over the years. In the beginning, the channel focused primarily on performing glitches on shooter games, such as Battlefield and Call of Duty, and later gaming guides for said games.[12] However, his videos later evolved into more gameplay and commentary. White first began introducing humor in his commentary in Battlefield BC 2 Hilarious Round Saving Rush Destruction, which was about an accident in the video game Battlefield: Bad Company 2, which he considered humorous.[13] He would later upload several videos concerning humorous moments he experienced playing the game. White's intentional sarcasm in expressing humor over commentating developed over his Fun Tactics series.[14] They consisted of mainly humorous and ludicrous methods of protection and assault.

White's first video in which he focused entirely on delivering humor in the form of insults and sarcasm through commentary was a video titled Modern Warfare 2 Ground War 1–20 Gameplay and Commentary. He deliberately played poorly in the game, and repeatedly insulted players who killed him while poking fun at himself and repetitive use of self-encouragement in which he praised himself while also using mild forms of criticism. He continued this trend with other games. White is widely known for his usage of elaborate, vulgar descriptions and creative cursing.

White started doing non-gaming related content with The Real Series which has him doing voice-overs on infomercials around 2014.[15] Later, around early 2016, he began talking about various types of topics, including internet drama, which is still a major part of the channel today.[16] Through 2016 and into 2017, he started reviewing different types of media and creating the popular series Moist Meter and Liquid Ladder for ratings and rankings.[17][18] He also does a year-end award show known as Moisties.[19] Since 2019, White has uploaded music videos onto his channel with his band, The Gentle Men.[20]

White created his penguinz0 YouTube channel on May 7, 2007.[21] White cited penguins as his favorite bird species, inspiring his channel name.[22] On August 5, he uploaded his first non-deleted video on the website, featuring gameplay of Gears of War.[23] The video received little attention and he made a few other videos attributing to Halo 3, the Gears of War series, and BioShock. These videos all gained little reception and attention. White gained brief popularity on a video where he commentated for the first time, which was Aliens vs Predator Let Rock Achievement Guide. White also during this time streamed on Justin.tv from late 2009 to early 2010.[24]

White's audience expanded at a rapid rate after he uploaded a video titled The Most Difficult Game Ever Created Gameplay and Commentary. In the video, he commented while playing the online Flash computer game QWOP, and associated it with the "hardest game he had ever played." The video eventually gained popularity after Ray William Johnson reviewed it on his Equals Three series, where he praised White's sense of humor.[25] The video's view count subsequently increased rapidly, and remains one of White's most viewed of all-time.[26] In 2014, White started doing the now highly popular series The Real Series in which he voiced over infomercials.[27]

Prior to 2020, media outlets sparsely referenced White's gameplay videos, although his 2015 video on Ark: Survival Evolved was referenced by The Daily Star.[28] In the 2010s, White drew attention from media outlets for his commentary videos, which were often of discourse about the YouTube platform and considerably critical of YouTube's policies.[29] For example, in 2013, White was cited by Tubefilter as panning YouTube's new comment system, which required a Google+ account to leave comments on videos.[30]

In 2015, after eight years of anonymity, in the video Paint the Town Red Gameplay and Commentary, White mentioned posting a Snapchat video of himself playing the recorder, then proceeded to publish his Snapchat username "big_moist" in the comments and deleting it later on. Several fans claim to have been added by him after a video[31] and a photo[32] went viral. White later posted snaps with him talking proving that it was indeed him.[33] White uploaded his first video showing his face on camera on March 5, 2017.[22]

In early 2015, White began speaking about various topics, including internet drama,[16] which has been a frequent video format on his channel since. Tiffany Kelly of The Daily Dot wrote that White is known for his "sardonic commentary."[34] In February 2016, The Guardian included his video reaction to the Fine Brothers' React World controversy in their coverage of the situation.[35]

On August 16, 2016, White through his Twitter account said that his YouTube channel had gotten disabled due to him getting two strikes on two of his videos. Because of this, the day before he made a video on a second channel named Cr1TiKaL to speak about the strikes. In the video, he explains how one strike came from the video "How Budlight is Made", in which there was an animated male genitalia present, to which the video was removed, and the other strike coming from the video "Second Life Video", where White put a link to his Budlight video which he re-uploaded to Pornhub. In the response, White talks about how his videos were wrongfully struck going through YouTube's spam guidelines and showing that he broke no rules.[36] On April 17 of the same year, White made a tweet and a video on his main channel speaking about how the strikes had been lifted and both of the videos are back up due to h3h3Productions getting in contact with his friend at YouTube.[37][38] In the video, White thanks his followers and everybody who helped, and talks about how much YouTube means to him.

In September, White was cited among other YouTubers who criticized the platform for mass-demonetizing videos.[39] In 2017, White began his Moist Meter series, where he reviews games and movies on a scale of 0%–100%, which includes his year-end Moisties, a countdown of the top five best and worst games and movies of that year that appeared on Moist Meter.[19][18] White also made a new tier-chart series known as Liquid Ladder, where he ranks various items of similar use and rank which is the best and the worst.[17] White's 2017 video showcasing character customization in Mass Effect: Andromeda was referenced by Kotaku.[40] White streamed on YouTube from 2016 to the beginning of 2018 but stopped because of the lack of communication with the staff.[41]

White continued to make content discussing happenings within the YouTube community. In January 2018, White addressed YouTube after the website removed his video discussing Logan Paul's suicide forest controversy.[42] In 2019, White discussed sexual assault allegations levied toward streamer OnlyUseMeBlade.[43] By March 2018, White's YouTube channel had accumulated over 2 million subscribers.[34] In May, White's video featuring a pit of 5,400 balls he made for his husky Tetra went viral, causing the Press Association to interview him about it and various media outlets to report on it.[44][45][46]

In 2018, White began streaming on Twitch. In March 2020, due to COVID-19 lockdown measures, White co-hosted an online Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament on his Twitch channel.[47] In 2020, White's YouTube channel saw significant change and new content which made the channel gain nearly over 3 million subscribers in the same year. He also expanded on his music project, The Gentle Men, producing five songs in 2020.

On June 15, 2020, White uploaded a video titled Something Huge For You, in which he announced a scavenger hunt for his newest music video at the time, Skynut, where the first five people to find the three hidden clues as well as the real-world destination within the scavenger hunt would be awarded one thousand US dollars each. Each clue is contained within three unlisted videos on one of White's channels named Charlie W. The third clue reveals the destination. The videos within the scavenger hunt are titled Clue, Clue B, and Clue C. In the "Clue C" video, the destination was revealed as Haesindang Park, also known as Penis Park. The code words "reindeer" from "Clue", "Stitch" from "Clue B", and "Penis Park" from "Clue C" were used, considering the meaning behind "Skynut". The winners were announced in the comments of the "Clue C" video. White still regularly uses his "Charlie W" channel to watch YouTube videos during his "YouTube nights" on Twitch.

During the later half of the year, White's popularity increased due to his Twitch streams centered around gameplay of chess and Among Us, a social deduction video game.[48] In June, he participated in the first PogChamps chess tournament, hosted by Chess.com.[49] White abruptly won "one of the more anticipated games" in the tournament, beating fellow Twitch streamer xQc in six moves.[50] Dot Esports noted the game as one of the five "biggest moments in streaming from 2020", with the clip of White's victory becoming one of the most-viewed in Twitch history, earning over 1.9 million views by December 24.[51] Ultimately, White was the winner of the tournament's consolation bracket.[52][53] In late October, White participated in U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Among Us streams.[54][55]

Over on his YouTube channel, White began to show highlight clips from his Twitch streams, including various amounts of open gameplay (particularly from Among Us, and more recently Rust), card openings, and YouTube nights. He has also made a tier-list series known as Liquid Ladder,[56] where he ranks various items on which is the best and the worst.

In September 2020, White's YouTube channel received a community guideline strike for uploading "graphic content with intent to shock."[3] A "prank road rage video" caused his channel to receive the strike, which YouTube initially upheld after White submitted an appeal.[3] Shortly thereafter, YouTube received backlash for their decision, and reversed the strike, stating it was "an over-enforcement of their policies."[3] In the same month, White criticized YouTube's lack of action toward channels that posted videos of animal abuse.[57] In November, White signed a contract with BroadbandTV Corp (BBTV) to become a content partner with the company.[58][59] At the time, White had accumulated over 6.5 million subscribers on YouTube.[58] Also in November, White spoke out in a YouTube video against Twitch's increase of DMCA crackdowns.[60] In December, White participated in a "Pokémon Week" event on Twitch, which featured several creators hosting streams where they unboxed different Pokémon card boxes.[61] Also in December, White announced that he engaged in a video call with Susan Wojcicki and many others at YouTube, discussing how they can fix the site.[62]

On January 21, 2021, White won "Best Reaction Face" and "Best YouTube/Social Media Meme" in the Grandayy's Meme Awards 2020.[63]
