Criminal Justice (Indian TV series)

Aditya Sharma (Vikrant Massey) is a cab driver who has a one-night stand with his passenger Sanaya Rath (Madhurima Roy). When he wakes up, Sanaya is murdered. He finds himself in a pool of her blood, and Sanaya has multiple stab wounds. He leaves the crime scene, but meets with an accident and is taken to the police station.

Initially, Madhav Mishra is interested in taking the case but later on Mandira Mathur (Mita Vashisht) takes the case. While she is successful in getting Aditya freed from charge of a rape, she fails to acquit him form the murder charge. Her associate Nikhat Hussain (Anupriya Goenka) along with Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi), later team up and start trying to save him.

While Aditya gets life imprisonment for the murder of Sanaya, Madhav Mishra still believes that Aditya is innocent. He figures out from Sanaya's Instagram account that she worked at a drug rehabilitation center, getting treated there herself. He goes through Sanaya's call records and gets a crucial lead. Sanaya had called up four wrong numbers that day, which Madhav finds strange. On his hunch he enquires about the past records of these numbers and gets to know that they belong to professional drug dealers. It turns out that Sanaya, after staying away from drugs for 3 years, had suddenly wanted to go back to drugs a night before she was killed.[2][4] She was part of a charity where her father's close friend and wife were the owners. She had found out that they engaged in child prostitution.

In January 2018, Sameer Nair, CEO of Aditya Birla Group's content studio Applause Entertainment, collaborated with BBC Studios, in order to adapt their British series Criminal Justice and The Office, for the Indian audiences.[6] Sameer teamed up with Shridhar Raghavan, to pen the screenplay and dialogues for the Hindi adaptation.[7] In April 2018, Tigmanshu Dhulia was announced as the director of the series,[8] eventually marking his digital debut,[9] and the makers roped in Pankaj Tripathi, Vikrant Massey and Jackie Shroff to play the pivotal characters.[10] It also marked Shroff's debut in a digital platform.[11] Principal shoot of the series began on 28 April 2018 and was completed in January 2019, with filming mostly held in Mumbai.[12] Vishal Furia served the credits for co-direction.[13]

The series' digital distribution rights were brought by Hotstar. On 15 January 2019, the platform announced its foray to original content production exclusively for the service,[14] with the shows release on its label called Hotstar Specials,[15] was officially announced.[16][17] The platform eventually collaborated with Applause Entertainment for releasing the show, along with the production house's four other shows in the first set of their original contents.[18][19] The official trailer of the series was released on 28 March 2019.[2][20] It was released on 5 April 2019, in Hindi and dubbed Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi languages.

On 13 February 2020, Sameer Nair announced a second installment of Criminal Justice, with Pankaj Tripathi, Anupriya Goenka, Mita Vashisht reprising their roles from their first season,[26] whereas Jisshu Sengupta and Kirti Kulhari joined the new cast. The series was released through Disney+ Hotstar on 24 December 2020.[27]
