D. K. Shivakumar

On 2 August 2017, Shivakumar's residence and office in Bengaluru were raided by the Income Tax Department in connection with alleged tax irregularities. Eagleton Golf Resort in Bidadi, a town in the outskirts of Bengaluru, frequented by Shivakumar and owned by his brother D. K. Suresh, was also raided.[15] Searches were carried out by 300 officials for a span of 80 hours in 67 locations[16] across New Delhi, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai and Shivakumar's hometown Kanakapura. It was revealed that ₹8 crore was seized from Shivakumar's Delhi residence and ₹2 crore from other locations. Central Reserve Police Force personnel were summoned to provide security during the raids.[17] The raid followed after 44 Members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from the Indian National Congress were hosted in the resort after a number of legislators from the party quit to join the Bharatiya Janata Party prior to the Rajya Sabha elections.[18] The raids ended on 5 August and reportedly an undisclosed income of nearly ₹300 crore was recovered.[19] He and his associates were given anticipatory bail.[20] On 3 September 2019, he was arrested on charges of money laundering and income tax evasion. He has called the charges "baseless" and "politically motivated" done by the BJP government of Karnataka.[21][22]

In 2015, the High Court of Karnataka issued a notice to Shivakumar, some of his family members, and a few granite mining companies on a PIL alleging their role in illegal mining activities in Kanakapura and Ramanagara sub-districts.[23]

In 2019, The Enforcement Directorate summoned D. K. Shivakumar for an enquiry of him, under the Money Laundering case to Delhi. Shivakumar faced the enquiry for 9 long days and was presented to the ED court. The ED officials requested the court for giving him into their custody, accusing that Shivakumar was non-cooperative in the enquiry.[24]

The court thus granted Shivakumar to its custody and was arrested on 3 September 2019. Shivakumar was then shifted to Tihar jail from the ED office. The Congress leaders accused this arrest as a political vendetta by the BJP. Shivakumar also accused that he was treated brutally, by not even being offered a seat by the officials during the enquiry.[25]

Shivakumar proposed applications for bail, which got rejected twice. Later the ED court granted him bail on 23 October, saying that tampering of proofs by the accused is not possible and released him under certain conditions set. The bond amount was 25 lakhs Indian rupees.[26][27]

Shivakumar proposed and laid out a foundation to build the world's tallest Jesus Christ statue in the Kapali hill of Kanakapura.[28] This plan faced a huge opposition and was a big controversy with the accusation of religious conversion around that region was bought forward by the BJP.[29]

Several Hindu associations called for a rally in Kanakapura the hometown of Shivakumar, opposing his initiative to build the statue. RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat along with the support of the BJP led a huge rally in Kanakapura opposing this construction and quoting that Kapali hill also has a temple situated on it and is a shelter for many Hindu pilgrims.[30]

On 5th Oct 2020, there was another income tax raid on DK Shiva Kumar's premises. A case has been registered against Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar for collecting ₹ 75 crore as disproportionate assets.Further more, several number of cases have been lodged against him in the Court. [31]
