Dan Amos

Daniel Paul Amos (born August 13, 1951 in Enterprise, Alabama[1]) is an American business executive. He serves as the chairman and chief executive officer of Aflac and Aflac Incorporated.[2]

Early life

Daniel Amos was born on August 13, 1951 in Enterprise, Alabama. He is the son of Aflac co-founder Paul Amos.

Amos graduated from the University of Georgia, where he received a bachelor's degree with a focus on risk management, and was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.[3]

Career

Amos joined Aflac in 1973,[2] working in sales for ten years,[2] during which time, he was the Company's top sales person.[2] He was named president of Aflac in 1983,[2] chief operating officer in 1987,[2] chief executive officer of Aflac Incorporated in 1990(2), and chairman in 2001(3). Aflac, a Fortune 500 company,[2] insures more than 50 million people worldwide.[2] It is the leading provider of individual insurance policies offered at the worksite in the United States[2] and is the largest life insurer in Japan in terms of individual policies in force.[2]

During Mr. Amos's tenure as CEO, revenues at Aflac have grown from $2.7 billion in 1990 to $23.9 billion as of December 31, 2013.[2] The Company has appeared on Fortune's Most Admired Companies list every year since 2001.[4] Aflac has also appeared on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 16 consecutive years.[5] Aflac is the only insurance company to be listed as an Ethisphere Magazine World's Most Ethical Company eight times, or every year since the inception of the award in 2007.[6] Amos received the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Award and the Torch of Liberty Award from the Anti-Defamation League.[7] He has been named as one of America's Best CEOs by Institutional Investor magazine five times[8] and has appeared on Chief Executive Magazine's annual Wealth Creation Index.[9]

In 2000, Amos was the executive who green-lighted the company's national advertising campaign featuring the Aflac Duck, a concept proposed by Kaplan Thaler Group, an advertising agency based in New York City.[10] The campaign is credited from taking Aflac's national brand name recognition from roughly 10% to above 90%.[11]

In 2008, Aflac became the first major U.S. firm to voluntarily afford shareholders an advisory vote on executive pay packages, including that of the CEO.[12] Shareholders supported the company's executive compensation packages annually from 2008 to 2013, with approval rates ranging from 93 percent to 98 percent.[13]

Amos previously served as a member of the Consumer Affairs Advisory Committee of the Securities and Exchange Commission.[3]

Philanthropy

Amos serves on the Board of Trustees of the House of Mercy of Columbus.[3] He is the former chairman of the board of The Japan America Society of Georgia[3] and former chairman of the University of Georgia Foundation.[3] Additionally, he is significantly involved in philanthropic endeavors with Emory Healthcare.
