Debora Kayembe

Debora Kayembe Buba (born c. 1975)[1][2] is a Scottish human rights lawyer and political activist.[3] She has served on the board of the Scottish Refugee Council, and is a member of the office of the prosecutor at the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Court Bar Association.

She originally comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She is a member of the Scottish Socialist Party, and sat on its Executive Committee from September 2015 to January 2021.

In 2019, she became the first African to have her portrait erected on the wall of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, honouring her achievements and contributions.[4][5]

In 2020 she faced racist attacks on her home in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian.[1][6]

In February 2021 she was elected Rector of the University of Edinburgh.[7][8] She will be the third woman to hold the role after Muriel Gray and Ann Henderson.
