Dirk Van Duppen

Dirk Van Duppen (2 August 1956 – 30 March 2020) was a Belgian doctor and politician.

Van Duppen was born in Turnhout. He studied medicine and became general practitioner.[1]

In 2004 he published the book De Cholesteroloorlog (The Cholesterol War) receiving much attention in Belgium and the Netherlands, a book in which he introduced the pharmac for financing medicines. That year he was on the list of candidates in the 2004 European Parliament election in Belgium. Two years later, he participated in the 2006 Belgian local elections as a candidate for the Workers' Party of Belgium (PVDA) and was elected as district councilor.[2] Among other things, he was concerned about increasing air pollution as a result of the planned Oosterweel Link.

In 2009 he received the Prijs voor de Democratie (Prize for Democracy).[3]

He was diagnosed with an pancreatic cancer in 2019.[4] Van Duppen died of this disease on 30 March 2020 in Deurne, aged 63.[5]
