Drugs and Alcohol Today seeks to explore the causal links between a range of health and public safety problems associated with what are currently referred to as drugs and addictions. National and international policy frameworks that have developed around production, distribution and use are also of interest.

The journal further seeks to highlight cultural models of socially integrated drug use, provide evidence of harm reduction and highlight the lived experiences of people who use alcohol and other drugs. We are particularly interested in cultural, social and material contexts of drug use, policy, and practices. The journal takes a critical stance towards the international control regime which we regard as a contributory factor in the problematisation of drug use and criminalisation of people who use drugs.
The journal’s editors encourage the use of inclusive and sensitive language in new submissions following the journal’s overall commitment to reducing stigmatization of people who use drugs. It is our aim to provide a platform for open and mindful reflections and high-quality research about drugs from across the world. Articles are double-blind peer-reviewed and accessible and relevant to a wide and varied audience. Regular and special issues include commentary and papers on the newest developments in social drug research. We also welcome viewpoint commentaries on ongoing political changes for a publication on our related blog.
Intended as a tool to assist in the search for better solutions and different thinking around drugs and the people who use them, Drugs and Alcohol Today covers among others the following subjects:
- Models and conceptualization of harm reduction in different parts of the world - Innovative treatment agendas, recovery, and treatment policy in general - Developments and challenges in the international drug policy environment - Novel theoretical and methodological approaches to rethinking and studying drugs and the world they inhabit - New findings into patterns of use, new psychoactive substances and drug combinations - Treatment options and drug use in prison settings - Practitioner and service user perspectives.
The journal is co-edited by Axel Klein, Aysel Sultan, and Blaine Stothard and is published by Emerald Group Publishing. It is available for subscription and also as part of an online subscription to the Emerald Insights Collection.
