Dunbar High School (Dunbar, West Virginia)

Dunbar High School was a high school serving the Dunbar and Institute areas of Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. The school mascot was the bulldog, and the school colors were black and white. At the end of the 1989–90 school year, Kanawha County Schools closed the school and sent the students across the river to South Charleston High School, beginning in the 1990–91 school year. The building was converted into Dunbar Jr. High School and later into Dunbar Middle School.

The Bulldogs won WVSSAC state championships in boys track & field (1957, '58, '59, ‘83, ’84, ‘85, ‘86, ’88, ’89, and ’90; the Dunbar dynasty won seven titles in eight years under the direction of Head Coach Steve Caldwell), boys basketball (1966), and girls basketball (1976).[1]

Dunbar High School had two Miss Kanawha Majorette: Eleanor Carney (1954) and Jeannie Irvin (1960).[2]
