He has an older brother Cymon Humphries and a younger brother Matthew Humphries, along with three sisters Amy, Georgina and Lucy. He was named after a character on the American TV show The Virginian Deputy Sheriff Emmett Ryker played by actor Clu Gulager. His youth growing up in London as a teenager in the 1980s was documented in his memoir Admit One: My Life In Film.

Projects he has lent his talents to have been honoured with Oscars, and Golden Globe, SAG, Emmy, and BAFTA awards. His performance was widely praised amongst the critical press, with Backstage West commenting; "James turns in an astonishing performance in the role of the profoundly damaged Tom, we never get the sense that he's acting up there."[1]
