Francesco Francescon

Francesco Francescon (born 17 November 1928 in Padua, Italy) is a retired Italian international football referee.[1]

Career

He officiated 7 international matches and was member of FIFA in 1964–1973. He officiated three matches in World Cup qualifying 1966 (1), 1970 (1), 1974 (1), two matches in EURO qualifying 1968 (1), 1972 (1)[2] and a friendly match in 1964. He also refereed two 1972 Olympic Games.

In club football he officiated some UEFA competition matches such as Champions League (5), UEFA Cup (7) and Cup Winners Cup (11).[3] He refereed 195 Serie A matches in 1959–73. He also attributed 1971 Coppa Italia Final.

Controversial episodes

In 1970-71 season of Serie A Juventus-Roma match played on November 29, 1970 (2:0) which was refereed by Francescon caused great controversy. Roma president Alvaro Marchini blamed Francescon which bribed by the Piedmontese club but at the end he disqualified.[4]

Personal life

After active refereeing career he was deputy commissioner of CAN A and B in 1985-94, while in 1985-99 he was an observer of UEFA referees[5][6]

Awards

He was awarded Giovanni Mauro Award in 1969 that is Referee of Year in Italy.
