Francisco Antonio Basavilbaso

Francisco Antonio de Basalvilbaso was baptized on March 31, 1732 in the Buenos Aires Cathedral, the son of Domingo de Basavilbaso and María Ignacia de Urtubia, belonging to a distinguished family of the city.[4] After completing his elementary studies, he made a trip to Europe in the year 1756, getting his law degree possibly at University of Seville.

In 1768, he served as regidor, and was elected alcalde of first vote of the Cabildo of Buenos Aires in 1774.[5] His main activity in Buenos Aires was on issues related to the laws. He was appointed as Síndico Procurador General (Attorney general) of Buenos Aires in 1775,[6] and served as Escribano Mayor of Government of the Río de la Plata between 1784 and 1795.[7]

Among his works as Procurador General of Buenos Aires, he was entrusted to establish schools of public education in the parishes of the city.[8] During his stay in Spain, he served as intermediary between the Court and his father, the Administrator General of the Correo in the Río de la Plata.[9]

Francisco Antonio de Basavilbaso was married to María Aurelia Ross, daughter of Guillermo Ross Munro, born in Scotland and María Antonia Jacinta del Pozo Silva, born in Buenos Aires.[10] He and his wife were the parents of numerous children, including José Ramón Basavilbaso, who, like his father, also exercised as Notary Mayor of the Government of Buenos Aires.
