The Fruta del Norte deposit is the largest gold deposits in Ecuador and a world class discovery.[1] The deposit is located in the south-east of the country in Zamora-Chinchipe Province. Details of the deposit can be found at http://www.lundingold.com/i/pdf/technical-reports/2014_10_21_Technical_Report.pdf

The deposit was discovered by a combination of a conceptual exploration model [2] that predicted mineralization might occur buried in a pull-apart basin (Aurelian Exploration Manager Steve Leary) and the observation that some silicification of these basin sediments had occurred at Fruta del Norte by geologist Julio Soto.

Aurelian experienced a stock explosion once the preliminary findings were announced. The company was taken over by Kinross. All exploration in the country, was soon halted by Ecuadorian presidential decree. Kinross negotiated unsuccessfully for a number of years with the government, and in 2014 sold the project to Lundin Gold Inc.[3]
