History
Standing at the towering height of 30 feet, this Lyngen produced sculpture has a touch of Christmas inspiration.[2] Gollis was built in 1992 during the term of Werner Kiil as Lyngen Municipal Mayor. The structure came with the idea of a Christmas beer tasting Santa Claus. The mayor gave this assignment to a teacher as his assignment during a visit to the local plastics school.[3] It is located in Lyngseidet in Lyngen in the county of Troms. Lyngseidet is 15 km north of the village of Furuflaten and 12 km by ferry from Olderdalen [4]
Gollis is popular with tourists, but the locals are divided in their views. It may be a symbol of the friendly and warm-hearted citizens of Lyngen, but has been voted the ugliest tourist attraction in Norway in the newspaper Verdens Gang.[5]
