Crossway is a publishing ministry of Good News Publishers. It is best known for publishing the English Standard Version (ESV) translation of the Bible. Crossway also publishes Christian books by various evangelical authors along with numerous evangelistic tracts.

Crossway Books

In 1979, Good News Publishers expanded its business by creating a book publishing subsidiary, Crossway Books. Under the leadership of Lane T. Dennis—Clyde and Muriel's son—Crossway has published more than 1,500 titles, including books by Francis A. Schaeffer, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, John Piper, John MacArthur, Paul David Tripp, Jen Wilkin, J. I. Packer, Chuck Colson, Frank Peretti, Max Lucado, Joni Eareckson Tada, and D. A. Carson.[2]

The ESV Bible

Translation philosophy

In 2001, Crossway published the English Standard Version (ESV) Bible. The official preface to the ESV describes the translation as an "'essentially literal' translation that seeks as far as possible to reproduce the precise wording of the original text and the personal style of each Bible writer."[3] A revision of the 1971 Revised Standard Version (RSV) text, the ESV emphasizes "'word-for-word' correspondence, at the same time taking account of differences in grammar, syntax, and idiom between current literary English and the original languages."[4]

The publishing team behind the ESV included over 100 evangelical scholars led by a 14-member Translation Oversight Committee. According to Crossway, "This hundred-plus-member team shares a common commitment to the truth of God’s Word and to historic Christian orthodoxy and is international in scope, including leaders in many denominations."[5]

The ESV Study Bible

In 2008, Crossway published the ESV Study Bible—the first study Bible to win the Evangelical Christian Publisher's Association Book of the Year Award.[6] According to The Dallas Morning News, the ESV Study Bible "released to strong demand in October 2008, selling out of its 100,000-copy first printing", and sold "more than 180,000 units within five months of release." Endorsed by evangelical leaders such as John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Al Mohler, and Mark Dever, the ESV Study Bible includes over 20,000 study notes; over 80,000 cross-references; over 400 charts, maps, and illustrations; and over 50 articles.[7]

Tracts

Popular tracts distributed by Good News Publishers include "Steps to Peace With God" by Billy Graham and "3:16" by Max Lucado.[8]

You're Special, by Ted Griffin, first published on September 1, 1982, is Good News's all-time best-selling tract. The English tract has been translated into Russian and Spanish.[9]

In 2012, Good News Publishers took over the operations of the American Tract Society.
