History

In 1904 when a high school was established in Rawalpindi bearing the name of the renowned Hindu sect SANA'-TUN-DHARAM. The property of the school included the premises of the school itself and the adjacent temple. The present building was constructed for the first time in 1913.

Pakistan was founded. The Education Department of the Government of Punjab announced that the SANA'-TUN-DHARAM school would be raised to the status of a college on 19 October 1948. The Government College Asghar Mall Rawalpindi had arrived.

The Department of Statistics at Govt. Postgraduate College, Asghar Mall, Rawalpindi, with special interest of faculty and support of the public, was established in 1963 under the headship of Prof. Manzoor Ahmad. After that Prof. Ch. Yousaf Ali became head of the department in 1971 and established the departmental library by gifting books from his sources and therefore, is named Ch. Yousaf Ali library to pay tribute to his invaluable service. Prof. Ghulam Hussain Kiyani played a pivotal role in the development of the Department of Statistics and College in general. He served as Head of Department and Hostel warden during his stay at college (1971-2003). Prof. Muhammad Irshad Ahmad (1987-2015) is a big name in the history of this college. He served Head of the Department of Statistics and Controller of Examination of the college in an exemplary manner. Prof. Dr. Zahid Iqbal, (Ph.D.) became the Head of Department in 2016 and tried his level best to start M.Sc Statistics at the College, prior to his hid joining at Allama Iqbal Open University as Associate Prof., keeping in view the need for the subject, but his efforts could not bear fruit. Prof. Hafiz Nazir Ahmad carried forward the initiatives taken by Prof. Dr. Zahid Iqbal, (Ph.D.). His sincere and tireless efforts helped Department to Start of BS (Hons) in Statistics, from Fall 2020. It is pertinent to mention here with honor, that faculty members who remained here in this Department are serving the prestigious institutes of the country including ( Prof. Dr. Yousaf Ahmad Shad, Chairman Department of Statistics, Quaid e Azam, University, Islamabad, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akbar, Chairman Department of Statistics, International Islamic University, Islamabad). Now the Department of Statistics at Govt. Postgraduate College, Asghar Mall, Rawalpindi is heading towards BS (Hons) in Statistics with fully equipped labs and highly qualified faculty in the field to cater the growing demand for well learned/skilled graduates in the field of Statistics.

Department of Geography

Muhammad Yaqub ( PRL)

The most prominent department of Government College Asghar Mall is Department of Geography, which is in within main Block near Principal's Office. This department was established in 1965 for the postgraduate (M.Sc) classes. Renowned woman scholar, later vice-chancellor of Quaid e Azam University Dr Kaneez Fatima Yousaf was the first Chairperson of this department. Afterwards scholars like Dr Zafar, Dr Inam Ullah Khan, Dr Arif Mahmud taught in this department. This department has the golden history with a number of gold medals, the department always has had very good faculty and a large number of students from all around Punjab have acquired their master's degree in geography from this department. Current faculty includes Mr Naveed Imran (HOD), Mr Shahid Hameed Janjua, Mr Sajid Mahmood Farooqi, Syed Atif Bokhari, Mr Nadeem Fayyaz, Mr Nasir Iqbal, Mr Ateeq ur Rehman and Mr Shafqat Iqbal, all the faculty members are the graduates of the same department but Mr Nasir Iqbal.
