Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad

Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad (GECA) is an autonomous engineering Institute in Maharashtra state of India. It is affiliated to the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and was established in 1960. The construction of the college was started in 1957 and was completed in 1960. Later on, it included the extension building that presently houses the Electronics and Telecommunication Department, Computer Science Engineering Department & Master of Computer Application Department. The recently constructed classroom complex houses the classes of first year students of all branches along with Information Technology Department.This is one of the best college of Maharashtra, it is among the top 10 colleges of Maharashtra (including IITs, IIITs, NITs). It is one of the premier engineering college of Government of Maharashtra.

In 2006, the college became an Autonomous Institute of Government of Maharashtra. The college has also got the TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme) grant. It holds national level and state level competitions round the year. It hosts a National Level Technical Festival, WINGS

Campus

The institute is located near the Aurangabad Divisional Board of Higher Secondary Education (SSC),The college is 2 km away from the Aurangabad Railway Station; 3 km away from the central bus stand; and 9 km away from the Chikalthana Airport.

Departments

Civil engineering

Civil Engineering is traditional branch of engineering and is amongst the founding courses when the institution was started. The department is located in the 'Annexe' building of the college. The Department of Civil Engineering conducts both full time and part time undergraduate courses in Civil engineering. It also conducts postgraduate programme in Water Resources Engineering and a part time Post-Graduate programme in Soil Engineering.[3]

Mechanical engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was the first branch started in the college in 1960. It has in all 12 laboratories including workshop. Department of Mechanical Engineering offers both part-time and full-time undergraduate courses.

Electrical engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad has a history of 47 years. The Department offers a unique undergraduate course (B.E.) in Electrical, Electronics and Power and also runs a part-time undergraduate course (B.E.) in Electrical, Electronics and Power and part-time post-graduate course (M.E.) in Power Systems. The department also offers the Testing & Consultancy work for industrial problems. The part-time undergraduate course leading to Bachelor of Engineering in 'Electrical, Electronics and Power Engineering' was begun with an intake of 30 students. The part-time M.E. course was begun in the year 1986 with an intake of 10 students.

Electronics and telecommunication engineering

Department of E&TC had started U.G. Course B.E.(E&TC) in 1986 with sanctioned intake of 40 and enhanced to 60 in 1996. Department also runs full time Post Graduate Course M.E. (EC) and well equipped Recognized Research centre leading to Ph.D. (Electronics Engineering). Part time BE (E&TC) and part time ME (EC) are also run to give opportunity to working graduates and diploma holders.[4]

Computer science engineering

Computer Science Engineering Department. Computers have captured the world. Today there is no single field were computers have not left a mark. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering established in 1986.

Information technology

Information Technology discipline was started in 2000–01 in the Government Engineering College, Aurangabad. Department of Information Technology got established from academic year 2002–03. Starting aim was to implement the UG programme in Information Technology with intake capacity of 60.

Master in Computer Application

It offers a Masters in Computer Applications (MCA), part-time and full-time M.E. programs, and PhD degrees.

Academics

Admissions

The admissions to the college are governed by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE). The DTE holds the all Maharashtra State level MH-CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test), which is a compulsory examination to admission in engineering. There are no payment seats in this college and all seats are on merit basis. It is one of the maharashtra's government premier engineering college and an elite college in marathwada region.

Placements records

The Training and Placement cell provides the official support base for placement of Final year students. The support services that it offers are in the form of arranging campus interviews, grooming students to face the final test of their knowledge. The Placement Office is fully computerized; it uses desktop computers and Institute LAN facility for placement data handling and communication. The institute has a remarkable rate of Placements for which institute has a Training and Placement cell, which is currently headed by Prof. S. S. Agarwal and an alumnus Suyash Khiwansara. MNCs like Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Technologies, Wipro, Cybage, Principal Global Services, Siemens, Bajaj Auto Ltd. Bosch India Ltd. Mahindra & Mahindra, Mondelez International, Larson and Toubro, Shapoorji Pallonji Ltd. Many PSUs like Bharat Petroleum and many big brands come down to campus to hire students.

Institute has signed a MoU with Texas Instruments, Tata Consultancy Services and many other companies which involves running training programs and co-operation between company and institute.

Student life

Wings

Wings is the annual national level technical symposium of the Government College of Engineering Aurangabad. It is the largest technical event in Marathwada region.

Team Aryans (BAJA Competition)

Baja SAE is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Teams of students from universities all over the world design and build small off-road cars that can withstand the harshest elements of rough terrain. The objective of the competition is to simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges.

Team Cybrotics (Robotics Club Of GECA)

Team Cybrotics, of Government College of Engineering, Aurangabad, is a group of robotics enthusiasts who have been fabricating robots since 2010. participating in ABU- Robocon, an International Robotic Contest for last 9 years. The National level competition (Robocon India) of ABU Robocon is being organised by Doordarshan and the winner of this national level competition gets the chance to represent India at International level.[5]

Ankur incubation center

Ankur Incubation Centre is just like, Incubators for babies. Same way new business is like a baby. Ankur Incubation centre nurture then and get them married, as in providing them every single thing thing for their Start-up, Launching and Growth.

Objective of Ankur Incubation Centre is to make an ecosystem for students, alumni and faculty by providing them opportunities to transfer their business idea into reality.[6]
