HBM Iqbal

HBM Iqbal is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and former Member of Parliament from Ramna-Tejgaon, Dhaka.[1]

Biography

A former member of parliament from Ramna-Tejgaon, Dhaka and a known businessman. Dr HBM Iqbal is a name to reckon within Bangladesh. [2] With a utopian dream Dr HBM Iqbal founded Premier Bank Limited in 1999, which has all the characteristics to be a people's bank. He has contributed in many enterprises across sectors. He is the chairman of Premier Group of Companies, which includes many reputed companies.

Dr HBM Iqbal is also the owner of the franchisee of Renaissance Hotels, Dhaka a concern of Marriott International and Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Dhaka under Premier Hotels and Resorts Limited and Premier Hotel Management Company Limited respectively .[3]

Iqbal was elected from Dhaka-10 in 1996.[1] He faced criticism after shots were fired from his rally on a rally of then opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in 2001.[1][4] Four people in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party rally were killed in the shooting.[5] He was charged in 2003,[6] but the case was dropped in 2010 after the Ministry of Home Affairs recommended charges be dropped in 2009.[7][8] In 2007, he was charged with corruption by the Bangladesh Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).[9][10][11][12][13][14] The High Court acquitted him in 2011. The ACC filed a petition against the acquittal but in 2015 dropped their petition.[15] As of 2010, he was a vice-president of the Awami League's Dhaka city unit.[16] He is the chairman of Premier Group of Companies.[17] He is also the chairman of Premier Bank Limited.[18]

Dr HBM Iqbal established Z Rahman Premier Bank School and College in Bhairab, Kishoreganj. This educational institute is decorated with modernity and designed to fulfill the specific needs of the underprivileged children [19]

Being the founder chairman of the Premier Bank Limited Dr HBM Iqbal has been awarded Bangladesh's Best Bank Leader 2019-20 by Asia One, Singapore. [20]
