Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort

Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort[1] is a golf and leisure complex, which opened in 2007. It is located between the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, in south-east Spain.

Geography and location

Hacienda Riquelme's location

Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort is located in a rural location between the foothills of the mountains of Sierra de Columbares and the village of Sucina.[2]

The area has been designated as part of the Carrascoy and El Valle Regional Natural Park.[3]

It is in the Region of Murcia, in the south-east corner of the Iberian Peninsula.

History

Built in its current layout in approximately 1857,[4] the main building is the manor house called El Casón de Riquelme, which initially consisted of one storey to which a series of secondary buildings were added surrounding an enclosed central patio, which was later to be divided into two: labourers' lodgings, stables, dovecots, water tanks, olive oil mills, barns, the use of which date back to the Roman Villas and Muslim hamlets.[5]

As with other similar estates in the neighbouring areas such as Peraleja and Borrambla, El Casón de Riquelme grew and was adapted over time in the same way as the great haciendas and country houses of Andalucía.

The manor house is a large elongated construction consisting of two sections in a palace-like structure. At the end of the 19th century, a second storey was added, along with a tower which has heraldic coats of arms on each of the facades of the building.

The second half of the 20th century marked the decline of the Hacienda Riquelme. As a dryland farm, production was limited to a few olive trees, cereals, almonds and esparto, which was only profitable if it rained enough.[6]

Polaris World bought the property and restored the buildings.[7]

Resort information

The golf resort consists of 1864 apartments in 78 low-level blocks.

It comprises a par 72, 18-hole golf course[8] designed by Nicklaus Design.[9]

The resort's town-centre has been restored.[10]

Hacienda Riquelme is a gated community with swimming pools and children's play areas, and facilities for tennis, basketball, football and pétanque.[11]

Golf

The course was designed by Nicklaus Design.

It makes up one part of the GNK Golf Circuit[12] (a collection of golf courses in the Región de Murcia), which includes:

  • Condado de Alhama Golf Resort[15]

Hacienda Riquelme Golf's playing surface has been grassed with Paspalum Vaginatum.[16][17]
