Biography

Hasina Jalal is a graduate of Economics and Political Science from Jamia Millia Islamia University in India.[1] She has a Master of Business Administration from the American University of Afghanistan and has furthered her studies in Women's and Gender Studies at the University of Northern Iowa as a Fulbright scholar.[2] Jalal has been involved with the founding and managing of several non governmental organizations including the Afghanistan Women Empowerment and Capacity Building Centre in 2011, the South Asian Female Alliance on Women's Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights, the National Association of Afghanistan Civil Society (NAACS), and the South Asian Women's Coalition for Cooperation in 2019.[3]

Hasina Jalal is a recipient of numerous regional and international awards and honors. Asian Rural Women’s Coalitions (ARWC) recognized her efforts with the Honoring 100 Asian Women award in 2012.[4] In 2014, Jalal was elected by public vote to receive the N-Peace Award from the UNDP Asia Pacific Office and the UN Secretary General's Special Advisor on the University for Peace to recognize her fight for gender equality, human rights, democracy, and peace in Afghanistan.[5][6][7] In 2016, she won the Global Women Leadership award.[8][9] In 2017 the World Human Rights Congress awarded her the World Super Achiever Award.[3] In 2020, she received the Iconic Women Creating a Better World for All award by the Women's Economic Forum and was also elected by public vote for 50 Most Influential Afghan Women award.[10][2][11]Hasina Jalal is fluent in Persian, Pashto, English, Turkish, and Hindi/Urdu. She has served in the government of Afghanistan and as a lecturer of economics in several Kabul based universities. She worked as the Policy Advisor to Minister and Acting Director of Program Design and Donor Coordination Directorate at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.[12] She also led a team of researchers in the Administrative Office of the President of Afghanistan.[13][14]
